Sonya

MIDWIFE / DIRECTOR

Nurture was born in 2004 out of a strong passion I had to make a difference in the journeys of birthing women and families. A desire to hold space for women to explore, plan and dream for a better birth for themselves and their babies. I had witnessed the extremes of birth, and thought I knew what was possible until I was invited into the homebirth space of a dear friend. That moment changed my life. They were completely in tune with their baby and each other and my role was to simply be there and hold space. I have cared and supported families through many hundreds of births over the past 26years, yet this one taught me my biggest lesson – to trust.

Women and families have been my biggest teachers. I am frequently shown how strong, resilient and fearless women can be, and I have been truly blessed to walk alongside them as they navigate their journey of meeting their baby. This sometimes means standing strong with them, speaking up for them, or simply holding them, and sometimes their partners and families.

My own journey of becoming a holistic midwife started as a paediatric nurse. I worked for 5years at the Mater Children’s Hospital while also working in adult and children’s accident an emergency, adult intensive care and teaching Midwifery at university. The highlight of my life though was becoming a mother myself to my three beautiful daughters and welcoming my grandchildren.

I have a deep seeded core belief that women can birth their babies, and with support, education and connection to their innate knowing, they will know what they need and when to keep themselves and their babies safe. I see myself as the Tour Guide.
The wise woman who takes on many roles. The role of sister; mother; auntie; clinician; protector and companion. I would love every woman who is pregnant to feel loved and nurtured; feel listened to and held. To look back on her experience and know that she mattered. Despite how her journey played out, I would hope it happened in her time, that she was supported how she needed, and she remained in the centre of the decision making. I would want her to know that I trusteed her and I felt honoured to be invited to share her experience with her.

Being a holistic midwife means I embrace many modalities of health and work interchangeably within them and with the elements that align with the woman and her beliefs. These include the use of essential oils, herbs, massage, acupressure, body work, and the mind/body connection. I have a wonderful and respectful relationship with health practitioners from a variety of modalities and enjoy the shared knowledge we have in caring for our families.

My life’s work has been with women and families for the past 36 years and this is the foundation for my qualifications. I have also completed a certificate of Nursing - training at the Mater Hospitals in Brisbane; a Bachelor of Nursing at ACU; a Graduate Diploma of Midwifery and a Masters of Midwifery at Griffith University and Diagnostics and Pharmacology at Griffith University. This enables me to order and interpret pathology and ultrasounds and write prescriptions for medications related to your pregnancy. I have also done various other courses such as Hypnobirthing; Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) and Spinning Babies which complements the academic learning. I wish you the amazing journey to parenthood. Thank you for stopping by, and if it feels right, we hope to welcome you into the Nurture Family.

Letisha

MIDWIFE

Hi, my name is Letisha. I am a proud wife, and mother of three gorgeous children, Bridie 13, Emmett 9 and Leena 4.

I am a midwife who works in the public hospital system, has provided back-up homebirth services for 10 years and facilitates learning for midwifery students through Griffith University. I have a lengthy history in the healthcare realm, starting my career in Paramedicine over 20 years ago.

I have given birth in both the hospital and home settings, with a Private Practice Midwife and as a mainstream client. I thought, having worked in health care for many years, that I knew a lot about birthing and pregnancy when I was pregnant with Bridie. Turns out that couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is … despite our learnt and innate knowledge and ways of being, the system is built for guidelines and protocols, placing most people within a ‘box’ - which perhaps is not in our individual best interests or original plan.

Studying midwifery after the birth of my first daughter taught me a great deal about bodily autonomy, advocacy of women/families and evidence-based practice. Leading me to change my own practice in Paramedicine (especially in the context of consent and informed decision-making), become a strong midwifery advocate and find a Private Practice Midwife for the birth of my next two children. Births - that turned into the most amazing, transformative and rewarding experiences. As such, I continue to advocate for physiological, psychological, physical safety for women and continuity of midwifery care affords that opportunity for many. It doesn’t matter where or how you give birth – IT matters that you FEEL SAFE, HEARD and SUPPORTED!

Bec

MIDWIFE / LACTATION CONSULTANT

Hi, my name is Bec and this is a little bit about me. I am an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), a Registered Midwife and a Registered Nurse.

My main role is as a lactation consultant, and I am also lucky enough to fill the other part of my midwifery cup by helping mothers bring their babies into the world with Sonya and her team. I often smile to myself knowing my passion is all about birth, babies and boobs! In my spare time ;-) I'm also a wife to a wonderfully quick-witted and supportive husband and mum to three beautifully amazing teenagers...well most of the time :-)

I became a Registered Midwife in 2004 purely by accident after specialising in paediatric nursing for several years. It was just something I planned to add to my resume, but attended my first birth and I was hooked! Who knew oxytocin was so addictive? I met Sonya a week before the birth of my second son and first homebirth where I experienced a birth that gave me true empowerment. I was now even more excited about the possibilities for women and their families but also for myself as a midwife.

I began attending births with Sonya within two years and then became a private practice midwife in 2010. Since then, I have had the enormous privilege of caring for hundreds of women and families during their forever life-changing experiences both as a private practicing midwife and midwife in the hospital. 'Privilege' doesn't come close to what this has truly meant to me! As a midwife, a major part of our role is supporting and nurturing families during their postnatal period and in 2020 I became an IBCLC as my passion started to delve more into the world of breastfeeding. I absolutely love that I get to guide and support mums and bubs through their feeding journey when things can become difficult. It's so important to me that families always receive personalised, compassionate, gentle, non-judgemental, evidenced-based care. For those who choose to breastfeed it can be one of the most difficult 'jobs' we get to do, but once we get it, can also be one of the most rewarding.

My passion is getting to know you, what works best for you as a family - how you want to birth, how you want to nurture your baby, what makes you laugh and cry (and me too:-)), supporting you and sharing information with you in ways tailored to help you get through the tough times and seeing your pride at the end knowing you've done it...that’s my passion and that's what makes me LOVE what I do!
